چکیده

Introduction In 1916 Albert Einstein postulated the effect of stimulated emission of radiation and thereby laid the theoretical foundations of modern laser technology. However, it was not before 1960 that the first laser, a ruby laser, was built by T.H. Maiman. Today, lasers are widely employed in both civilian and military settings. Examples for civilian applications include CD-players, medical lasers, industrial laser welding and laser induced fusion experiments. Militarily, lasers are used as range finders, communication devices and target designators for laser guided weapons.

26 Directed Energy Past , Present , and Future

The idea of using light as a weapon can be traced back to Hippocrates, commander of the Greek forces in 212 B.C. His forces supposedly set fire to the sails of the Roman fleet by focusing sunlight with mirrors. Weapons systems based on lasers and “ray guns,” long a staple of science fiction, have captured the imagination of people everywhere. But with steady progress toward the development of l...

High Intensity Lasers in Periodontics: A Review

Background and Aim: Lasers can serve as a new powerful tool in dentistry. High intensity laser therapy is becoming the treatment of choice compared with conventional periodontal therapy due to accurate incision and soft and hard tissue ablation, hemostasis, reduction of postoperative pain and infection, optimal debridement, and enhanced healing. Although high intensity laser therapy assumes to ...

Assessment of Weather Sensitivities and Air Force Weather (afw) Support to Tactical Lasers in the Lower Troposphere Thesis

The Department of Defense (DoD) is spending millions of dollars on many Directed Energy (DE) programs. One of the programs, known as the Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL), requires the use of a high-energy laser in order to destroy ground targets from a standard C-130H aircraft. The ATL, which is still not fully operational and battle field ready, presents a great amount of potential for maintainin...

New concepts for Space-Based and Ground-Based Laser Weapons

Is the Department of Defense (DOD) pursuing the correct investment strategy for space-based laser weapons? Recent advances in lasers, optics, and spacecraft technologies may bring high-energy laser weapons to a sufficient level of maturity for serious consideration as space weapons against the theater ballistic missile threat. However, these technological advances also make other architectures ...

Peace Through Light - the Airborne Laser Lab Program

te c h o p s D irected Energy Weapons (DEW) have been a recurring theme in science fiction literature and cinema ever since H.G. Wells published the ‘War of the Worlds’ in 1898. The idea of a ‘death ray’ that can instantly destroy or burn a target at a distance retains its allure to this very day. More than a century after Wells contrived his ‘heat ray’ the technology is maturing to the point o...
